South Africa is a country rich in flora and fauna. We have a diversity and abundance of flora unsurpassed anywhere else in the world.

There are six Floral kingdoms on planet earth. The Cape Peninsula alone (on the South Western Tip of Africa) is home to one of these kingdoms.

There are something in the order of 25 000 differant species of flowering plants that are indigenous to this country.

We also have aproximately 1017 species of indigenous trees. About 300 of these trees are indigenous to the Gauteng Highveld region.

This website has been compiled in the interests of furthering the conservation of trees and shrubs indigenous to South Africa, and the Gauteng Highveld region specifically. To enlighten people as to the rich palette of indigenous hardy plants available for gardening and to help combat the problems associated with mass urbanization and the inevitable destruction of the environment as a result, by encouraging the propagation of the species that are under threat.

The Tree House is intended to be used as a catalogue of Highveld trees, for gardeners in the Gauteng and greater Highveld area who are looking for indigenous hardy plants from their area. If you have any suggestions as to how I can improve this website or make it more useful please feel free to let me know.
